Riedel Wine Tasting Master Class with Matt Knight
Matt Knight from Riedel guided Lakefield students through an informative master-class about wine tasting and different shapes of wineglass. They were amazed to discover how the shape of a wineglass affects the enjoyment and even the taste of the wine.
There are many varieties of types of wineglass and through this class with Matt Knight we discovered how the different shapes can enhance the bouquet and flavours of a wine.
Matt Knight explained how the intensity of wine aromas also strongly correlates with the ratio between the diameter of the cup (the widest part of a glass) to the diameter of the opening.
Something that our students had never thought about was how shape impacts taste. By tasting the same wine in different glasses, they discovered for themselves that their heads tilted differently. For instance, when trying the wine in wide-rimmed glasses, they lowered their head, but when drinking from narrow rims they tilted their head back. These different positions change the speed with which the wine hits the tongue, as well as where it hits. The different parts of the tongue and flavours are activated, bringing out different tastes in the wine.
